Working without doership is yoga

A doctor in Hyderabad conducted cataract surgery on Sri Nannagaru's eyes.

He told Sri Nannagaru: "I am doing this surgery only for my satisfaction and not for the sake of the money. Do you remember my request to permit me to conduct the surgery ?" The doctor was trained in the famous Aravind Eye hospital of Madurai. He asked Sri Nannagaru to sleep on the bed. After 3 minutes he asked Sri Nannagaru to get up. Every patient is normally given anaesthesia before commencing the surgery. So Sri Nannagaru was under the impression that he was given anaesthesia in those 3 minutes.

Sri Nannagaru then asked the doctor: "What is this? Did you finish giving me anaesthesia?"

The doctor replied: "The anaesthesia has been given and the surgery too, has been done. Now you can get up from the bed."

Referring to this, Sri Nannagaru said: "This is called Yoga. Working skillfully, patiently, and tactfully is called Yoga. Working without expecting results and without doer-ship is also called Yoga."

Veda Vyasa is considered as Lord Narayana with two hands

There are several prayers described in the Vedas. The Karmakhanda has been mentioned in detail in the Vedas. The Vedas also mention the procedure to be followed for marriage, for constructing a house etc., There is nothing left out unmentioned in the Vedas. Veda Vyasa has written Mahabharata containing one lakh verses which are considered as the essence of all the four Vedas. Vyasa said: There is nothing in this world which is left unmentioned in the Mahabharata; Also if there is something not prevailing in this world, you may find it in Mahabharata. The attributes of every Jiva, the manner in which a Jiva behaves in a particular situation have been deeply analysed and mentioned in the Mahabharata. Therefore Veda Vyasa is greatly honoured. It is said that though Vyasa has only two hands and Lord Narayana has four hands, Vyasa is considered equivalent to Lord Narayana. Lord Narayana is considered the Supreme Essence. Vyasa is considered equal to Lord Narayana.

All the three acharyas are equally venerable

Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya all these three names come in our study books. I have equal reverence for all the three acharyas. Shankaracharya and Madhvacharya both were sannyasins since childhood. However, Ramanujacharya got married. Initially, he has been a householder, later he accepted sannyasa. All these are external tussles. Still, he was equal to Shankara. According to his destiny, Ramanujacharya got married. Lord Shankara is the source of Shankaracharya, Lord Rama's brother Lakshmana is the source of Ramanujacharya and Lord Hanuman is the source of Madhvacharya. Both Lord Hanuman and Madhvacharya are equally proficient in Sanskrit grammar. As far as sadhana is concerned, all three acharyas preached equally. All three of them wrote commentaries for the Gita, Upanishads and Brahma sutras. When it comes to describing the goal, all the three differed from each other. According to Adi Shankara: As a river flows and merges into an ocean, the Jiva finally merges into God and becomes one with Him. Rivers like Ganges, Godavari and Kaveri merge into the ocean. Once they get merged, you cannot differentiate between the water-related to rivers and the ocean. Similarly, once the Jiva unites with God, one cannot differentiate between them. As per Ramanujacharya and Madhvacharya, a Jiva can only secure saamipya and saannidhya ie proximity to God; the Jiva can only secure the nature of God but cannot become one with Him. Thus the three acharyas differed in defining the final destination. But as far as sadhana is concerned, all the three of them preached equally and are equally adorable. As far as we are concerned, we have to adore them and listen to them.

God is waiting for apt time to grant liberation!

Once, Sri Nannagaru asked a devotee: "Did you forget the task that I wanted you to do?

The devotee replied: "No, Nannagaru. I didn't forget it. I am waiting for the appropriate time."

Referring to this, Sri Nannagaru said: "When a human being doesn't have forgetfulness, how can God have the same? God is waiting for the appropriate time to bring maturity to you and bestow jnana."

Being overwhelmed by praise or getting dejected by blame poisons the brain

You may get praised by some people but dont allow that poison to enter inside. Some people may criticize you but most of the criticisms arise out of jealousy. Not being aware of this, they continue criticizing. Both the persons criticizing as well as the persons listening to such criticism are equally at fault. When any devotee criticized the teachings of a particular Swamiji in front of Bhagavan, Bhagavan said: 'It is not that swami's fault to say like that, rather it is your fault for having visited him and listened to him. It is because you have that kind of weakness that you are approaching them. Else why would you approach them?' The attributes of a true sadhaka are to give up all the external tussles. Dont absorb the dust on road, leave it on the road itself. Some people may praise you, dont absorb it inside. Some people may criticize you. Dont absorb it inside. Doing so will poison the mind and ruin your entire sadhana. There is a reason behind every praise and blame. Why do you get ruined by absorbing them? Listening to them, dont poison your brain. The disease in the body can be cured by visiting a hospital. But the disease in the mind cannot be cured without sadhana, Guru's Grace and appropriate time. Therefore dont allow your brain to get poisoned by absorbing praise and blame.

Introvert your mind

A devotee asked Nannagaru: "You have said: "Bear injury and bear insult; even that is a part of sadhana (spiritual practice). But practically, it (bearing insult) is not as easy as it is said."

Sri Nannagaru replied: "The scriptures declare:'Bear insult; even that is a part of sadhana'. It is because Guru's Grace showers more upon them who patiently forbear the insult when compared to those who react back instantly. If you accept the insult patiently, your depths of tolerance will increase. It will in turn introvert your mind. This disgrace did not fall upon you without the knowledge of God. If you think that God has blessed you with this disgrace only to teach you some lesson or to rectify some flaw within your thinking faculty, you will be able to endure the insult patiently. You must realize that you could have insulted someone in the same manner in one of your previous births. Hence you are reaping the fruit according to the seed that you have sown. Only then you will be able to forbear the insult. If you insult anyone, do remember that you will be cleansing them from their impurity, dirt and sin. That dirt, impurity and sin will settle down in your mind and an equivalent amount of your merit will be transferred to them."
