Many ways to control your mind

Once, a devotee asked Sri Nannagaru: "Bhagavan has suggested the path of Self enquiry in order to control the mind. But in spite of doing Self-enquiry, my thoughts are not subsiding. They are increasing manifold."

Sri Nannagaru replied: "You are trying to cling to a single sentence of Bhagavan and declaring that you are unable to control your mind. Self-enquiry too facilitates the destruction of the mind. However, Lord Krishna narrated several means of destroying the mind in the Gita. Even if one possesses complete faith in the Lord or chants his name or performs Japa or meditation, or surrenders himself to the feet of the Lord, the mind gets destroyed. Adopt the method that suits you the best and try to wipe out your mind."

Sadguru Nannagaru explains the means of securing sense control and mind control

The Lord mentioned in the Gita that every person should have at least some dispassion. But you are all completely devoid of dispassion. It is only due to this reason that the mind gets extroverted. Without dispassion, without practice and without penance, there is no question of having sense control and mind control. Unless the senses and mind get subsided, the Power inside, the knowledge and God inside are not revealed. Silence and Seclusion aid in mind control. First is Silence: Silence doesn't mean that one has to completely shut his mouth and sit down for days together. Talk only when there is a necessity to talk. Dont talk excessively even at home. When you talk excessively, people lose reverence for you in society. Silence increases your spiritual power. Second is Seclusion: Previously people used to run away into forests for the sake of seclusion. Currently, it is not possible. So as far as possible, try to remain secluded at home for an hour or two. Every person represents a big man when they are amongst four people in the society whereas a person's weaknesses are revealed only in seclusion.

Working without doer-ship is yoga

A doctor in Hyderabad conducted cataract surgery on Sri Nannagaru's eyes.

He told Sri Nannagaru: "I am doing this surgery only for my satisfaction and not for the sake of the money. Do you remember my request to permit me to conduct the surgery ?" The doctor was trained in the famous Aravind Eye hospital of Madurai. He asked Sri Nannagaru to sleep on the bed. After 3 minutes he asked Sri Nannagaru to get up. Every patient is normally given anesthesia before commencing the surgery . So Sri Nannagaru was under the impression that he was given anesthesia in those 3 minutes.

Sri Nannagaru then asked the doctor: "What is this? Did you finish giving me anesthesia?"

The doctor replied: "The anesthesia has been given and the surgery too, has been done. Now you can get up from the bed."

Referring to this, Sri Nannagaru said: "This is called Yoga. Working skillfully, patiently, and tactfully is called Yoga. Working without expecting results and without doer-ship is also called Yoga."

Sadguru Nannagaru describes the goodness of Pandavas quoting the example of Vikarna

A small help done to good people is remembered forever throughout life, whereas how much ever you help the bad people it is easily forgotten. Duryodhana had a brother name Vikarna. Many people have a misconception that Vikarna refers to Karna's son. He was not Karna's son but was Duryodhana's brother. When Dusshasana tried to disrobe Draupadi in the Kurusabha, it was only Vikarna amongst the Kauravas who condemned that act vehemently. Vikarna said:' Disrobing a woman in front of all is a condemnable act'. Vikarna took the courage to criticize Duryodhana. This was the only good deed done by Vikarna in his entire life. Later he accompanied Duryodhana in all his misdeeds. In the Mahabharata war, Vikarna took the side of Kauravas. As Bheema killed several people in the Mahabharata war, even Vikarna got killed in the hands of Bheema. Immediately after killing Vikarna Bheema was reminded of the condemnation done by Vikarna when Draupadi was being disrobed. Suddenly tears rolled out of Bheema's eyes for having killed Vikarna. Bheema felt: 'I had to kill someone who spoke good words for us'. I am telling you this incident to reflect on the goodness of Pandavas. Vikarna did only one good deed in his entire life. Bheema remembered it very well forgetting all the other bad deeds of Vikarna. Vikarna did not stop the misdeed of Dusshasana. He just condemned it. Still, Bheema possessed gratitude towards Vikarna.
