"Nannagaru dwells in Devotees' hearts always" - (By Peddiraju Garu)

The mother, who gave birth, showed me this world with care, holding my hand. My wife led me to Nannagaru, who showed me the world of spirituality, with a heart filled with motherliness. I express my gratitude to both these individuals with a sincere heart.

My acquaintance with Nannagaru has been for three decades. The first discourse I attended was at Bheemavaram. Nannagaru starts his discourse by addressing all those gathered as “Relatives of the soul”. When I heard him say those words, I felt sprinkled onto my dry heart a spring of heavenly waters, thereby soaking it with its heavenly waters. I went on to the dais. And he held my face with both his hands on my cheeks. The love that pours out of those eyes cannot be described. I can never forget it.

I have, since then, visited Nannagaru many times. I had to stay away from Jinnuru because of transfers in the job. But whenever Nannagaru came to Vishakhapatnam, I would certainly visit him at Padma Garu’s house. I would come to Jinnuru twice a year. It always hurt me very much that I never had the good fortune of visiting Nannagaru daily or accompany him on pilgrimages or to Arunachalam, like the devotees residing in places near Jinnuru.

Though I did not know anything about devotion, knowledge, liberation, self, surrender etc, I began to develop a liking towards spiritual matters in this long journey with Nannagaru.

Despite going to Nannagaru with a mind full of impure thoughts (related to the six internal enemies), carrying bundles of ignorance, without any kind of special virtues, taking baby steps in the path of devotion and spiritual practice, Nannagaru showered affection on me without taking any of these into consideration. Even when I was sitting somewhere in the crowd, he would call me and speak to me. He would tell my wife that she had a nice smiling face and countenance. We went to Jinnuru to relish those wonderful moments and those affectionate words.

“You are doing well in this job. Please have dinner at the ashram before you leave. I remember the days of your teaching in college. You taught so much more for the little salary they gave. Today God has given you these days for the service you did back then.” he said. Tears welled up in my eyes. I saw love surging from the depths of the heart in every letter he spoke. I have no scale to measure that wonderful love. Can our relatives, friends, for that matter anyone else share so much love?

After my transfer to Amaravati, I could go frequently to Jinnuru and visit Nannagaru more often. I accompanied Nannagaru to the Krishna pushkaralu and the replica of Tirumala constructed by TTD at Vijayawada. This was an unforgettable experience. We conducted our second son’s Upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony) in Jinnuru Ramana Kshetram and were very happy to be blessed by Nannagaru.

“You are coming regularly to visit me with a lot of interest and attention. Please do continue to come.” He would tell me. Without great practices and good, and pious deeds in many previous births, is it possible to get such a Guru’s holy company? The moments spent in his company are the sweetest of memories. I have seen the cool glow like that of the full moon on his face, affection and love in every word, peaceful glance, sweetness in speech, a divine smile on his face. I have seen these in every visit. I have tasted inexpressible and unworldly peace and bliss in his presence. Every movement of his body expresses his naturalness. Those moments, those scenes are etched into my heart.

In 2017, when Nannagaru was in Vishakhapatnam, he came over to our home and blessed us and all of our relatives. He was travelling from Sujatha Garu’s house to the Doctor Garu’s house and despite being way past his lunchtime, he stopped at our house. He had promised us that he would visit our home and despite the time crunch, he spent some time at our house to keep his promise. While at Sujata Garu’s house, he indicated that he would leave the body in a year. A few days later he was admitted to Apollo hospital in Vishakhapatnam. That was his last tour to Vishakhapatnam. Excepting very few individuals, the devotees were not allowed to visit Nannagaru at the hospital. “I shall pay a visit to your home!” he had promised. After Nannagaru came back to Jinnuru, many devotees had the good fortune of offering their services. I bow down and salute all these devotees.

In 2017, after Nannagaru left the mortal coil, he has become the guiding light from within our hearts. With Nannagaru’s family members’ pious intentions and the service offered by the devotees, the construction of Nannagaru Mandiram and Arunagiri at Ramana Kshetram is completed. Nannagaru’s idol has been consecrated at Nanna Ashram in Arunachalam. By Nannagaru’s grace I, along with my family, have had the good fortune of being able to attend all the major auspicious celebrations. The relationship with Nannagaru and his family members is continuing this way. Kannamma Garu has always shown special care and concern towards us. Having the good fortune of the holy company at Ramana Kshetram, listening to the words of Bhagavan and Nannagaru through his disciples, remembering and contemplating the divine, nectar-filled teachings of Nannagaru all these fill me with joy.

By Nannagaru’s grace, I was able to write “Sri Nannagaru’s Gita” and dedicate to him. “This is like Ravindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali. Your writing has your heart in it” Nannagaru praised. And that gave me immense happiness. I have been receiving praises way beyond what I deserve now and then. Nannagaru made me write this despite my poor understanding of the Heart. This has been published in “Jnana Phalam” book. Ref: Jnana Phalam Book

Being a person still attached to name and form, I, like other devotees, became distraught when I could not see Nannagaru in form. I remember Nannagaru’s words that he would be alive in the hearts of his devotees even when his body drops off. I experienced that he was indeed in our very heart.

Nannagaru came down to our level and taught us in the simplest way. True bliss and peace come only when the mind travels inwards; we should go through both favourable and unfavourable circumstances like one savour Payasam (milk sweet); the enjoyment we get from the world is because of our identification with circumstances; it is better to be born as an animal and have devotion rather than be born as a human and have no devotion, and so on., in simple and plain language.

When we see Nannagaru we can appreciate Buddha’s calm mind, Adi Shankara's jnana, Ramana’s ever joyous Self and Sri Ramakrishna’s devotion. I would be ever indebted to Nannagaru for his clear exposition of self-enquiry and devotion. I remember that just for having called him Nannagaru, he has taken over all my responsibilities upon himself. I remember him telling that desire is the root cause of sorrow. I remember the scenes of grief-stricken devotees calming down and returning with a smile on their face, just by one glance of his.

You have taught throughout your life with the heart as its centre. Your teaching is full of naturalness. That is why you were able to make temples out of our hearts and stay there as the indweller. Our minds are tired by running after these shallow worldly affairs. Oh, Gurudeva! Even if run one end to another, it is all mirages and no real water anywhere. Our throats are parched due to the tiredness of pursuit. To satisfy our thirst of seeking and spread the essence of love through your wonderful words. You will come again, won't you?

Ref: Jnana Phalam Book

All is decreed by God

In 'Karthuraagyayaa prapyate phalam' (the first line of Upadeshasaara), Karta implies Ishwara and not our ego. The meaning of the word Ishwara is ruler ie one who rules our lives. Who has to take birth in which family, how long should a particular body be alive and when should it expire - all this is decreed by God. If you are born in a particular family in Tadinada, it is not due to your intellect. It is God's decree. Power and Strength belong to God. Your ego is powerless. Everything happens according to Ishwara's plan and design. Sometimes the work done may yield result without much effort whereas sometimes the work done may not yield result despite the tremendous effort. Why it happens so is beyond your reach. Therefore stop worrying. Ishwara is not a fool. He drives me, you, all the five elements and this entire creation according to His plan and design systematically. Therefore if you do good, forget it, else it will foster the mind. God knows when (which birth) and where to gift you with the result of your good deed. Remember that there is God, there is Ishwara.

Do actions without expectations

One of the devotees asked Nannagaru - "You are saying that silence is gold, how can we reach the silence and receive that gold?"

Sri Nannagaru was in silence for a few minutes.

Then he addressed the question - "You don't have the right to Eternal Knowledge(jnana). To reach the state where you can understand jnana, you have to do work/actions(karma) without ego. Your actions should be without expectation from others and filled with devotion. The Guru's grace is needed to understand this Eternal knowledge (jnana)".

"Guru's grace alone exists" - (By Venamma Garu)

I was born in Jinnuru. I used to study in the school near his house. I would go every day, in the intermission, to their house to drink water from the pot that they had kept in the verandah. I had no idea then that this very house would become my sacred pilgrimage in the years to come. I have no memories of seeing him around the house then. When my paternal aunt told me about Nannagaru, I asked, “Who is it? Is it Rajayamma’s son?” Little did I know that he would be the charioteer of my life!

My sister-in-law took me to Savitri mammagaru’s house. That is where I had the good fortune of meeting Nannagaru for the first time. While I was still at the threshold of the house, Nannagaru said, “Come Venamma!” That day I did not find it special. But now, 30 years later, my heart swells in happiness that God himself called my name. For a few days after that, I used to have a strong urge to have his darshan daily. Unable to bear the parting, I asked Nannagaru if I could stay in Jinnuru, my home town. But Nannagaru said no and that he would be coming to Hyderabad regularly. That year he came to Hyderabad 4 to 5 times. I enjoyed his holy company so much that when I walked by the water tank near his house, I would speak out with great jealousy, “oh! Water tank! How lucky you are. He walks by your side every day and sees you every day!” In those days, we stayed in Karnataka. I used to attend Satsang there. I used to point to the clouds there and tell everybody, “Look at these clouds. If there is something anyone wants to convey to Nannagaru, you can tell them. They are going that way!”This is not imagination or flowery words. I really felt so. To this day, I have no idea why I have so much love for him. He alone should know.

In Karnataka, a very famous Swamiji used to come to our house. He said he would teach us meditation. He taught us for 45 minutes. He played the flute as long as we meditated. He played really well. He asked later, what I felt during the meditation time. I said, I like Bhagavan, and so my mind was full of thoughts related to him. He said meditation was the only means for jnana. He also said that Buddha attained liberation through dhyana alone. “How is that Swamiji? If the jiva who is supposed to travel through births or attain liberation is put under watch, it will be obvious in this very second that he does not exist! Buddha gave scope to watch also!” I said. He did not like what I said. He said that Bhagavan is ‘Not at all a Maharshi’. I felt no reaction to his statement. I narrated all this to Lakshmi. Lakshmi told about this incident to Nannagaru. Nannagaru scolded me and said that it was unnecessary for me to debate with them. Later, when I went to Jinnuru, Nannagaru asked me how I felt when the Swamiji said ‘Not at all a Maharshi’. I said that I felt nothing. Elaborating further I said, “What will he gain if somebody says something good about him and what will he lose if somebody said he was not a Maharshi.” I am narrating this to highlight how Nannagaru teaches us. Nannagaru said to me, “You think of Bhagavan as God. Hence it seems natural for you to say that he neither gets nor loses anything when somebody says he is not a Maharshi. Now I ask you, what is it that you gain or lose when somebody says something like that to you?” I answered that I lose nothing. “If you can stay like that, no sorrow will touch you even if the whole creation were against you!” he said. Is it possible to forget these words even in births to come? If he said something with personal reference, it just has to get rooted firmly! For all thousands of his devotees, each one feels Nannagaru is his nearest and dearest. It is like that! That’s all there is to say!

I used to go to Ramakrishna math regularly. But after meeting Nannagaru, for almost a year, I could not go because of one or another reason. After a long time, I got to know that math Swamiji was unwell and was hospitalized. He used to care for me. So, I went to visit him at the hospital. He said that I had left Thakur. I did not agree. I told him that I liked Bhagavan’s subject and that I was going to Nannagaru’s discourses. He said that it was ok. He was worried that I had left the path of God totally. He added, “They say that ego, world and God are illusions. Don’t you find that difficult?” “Not at all! In fact, it was these very words that attracted me.” I said. He was very happy. Lakshmi narrated all this to Nannagaru. Nannagaru used to encourage us by saying, “You spoke well. Even the Swamiji would not have understood that!” Not that the Swamiji did not know. It was a way of encouraging us. Nannagaru is slowly pulling all of us towards the ocean of peace and bliss like a calf is drawn along the way by showing it bundled green grass fodder.

In Karnataka, there used to be a very rich MP(Member of the Parliament). He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to spend crores of rupees on yajnas. He was my brother’s friend. Once, he performed a yajna which was not attempted by anyone in recent times. It is said that the last mention was that of the king Bhoja Raja. He mentioned this and said that only he had performed such a yajna after Bhoja raja. I said, “What is great about it? Lord Shiva himself gave you the devotion, the money and the desire to perform this yajna and got it done by you. That’s all.” He was surprised and asked me who my Guru was. In those days I would go on and on if the name Nannagaru was mentioned, like a possessed person. So, I told him about Nannagaru and Bhagavan’s subject and how he was trying to take us to the sorrowless state for 15 minutes. He said that he was interested in visiting such a Guru. He continued, “You are saying that the Lord himself has done everything! Is there nothing that I have done then?” I answered him that the fruit of all these yajnas is the darshan of my Guru and that because he had performed all these pious deeds, that he had the chance of my Guru’s darshan. Everyone, there was stunned by my words. He then said to me, “All right! Then what is it that you have done to get that good fortune of his darshan?” “I have not done anything in this birth. It is only due to the good deeds that I must have done over many previous births.” I answered. How much ever I look for one, I am not able to pinpoint any reason for this love I have for Nannagaru. What have I done for him? I keep thinking. There is nothing I have done. He has not looked for any return from any of us to shower his grace. Nannagaru has taught this subject to all of us till it is well digested and has become our very blood. I cannot write in words if I have to tell my relation with him. Even if I were to attempt to write, it would be like a drop in an ocean.

For a period of time, I felt very sad that I am unable to make any effort to become intimate to God. But I used to love the preachings of Sri Nannagaru. Whenever I heard such preachings( that touched my Heart) I used to experience boundless happiness. Once in one of the speeches, Sri Nannagaru said: "If I do not think of you, you cannot even think of me." During that period of time, I thought of Sri Nannagaru almost throughout the day. I then felt: " What else do I require if Nannagaru is thinking of me for so many times?" Why should I feel sad that I am unable to make any effort to attain GOD? Isn't it he, who does everything? Is there anything which I can do on my own? " On thinking thus, I lost my inferiority complex (of unable to make any spiritual effort). I always felt that all my flaws will be washed away in His flood of Grace.

Even now, I do not have any desire for liberation. Once I asked Nannagaru, “Not once did I get a thought that I should attain liberation, Nannagaru!” He said, “You need not desire. You just have to deserve it!” So, I always feel that his words and his smile are enough for me. We can feel contentment and closeness just by looking at that smile.

Once, after attending a discourse at Chinchinada, I was returning by walk. Nannagaru’s car stopped by and I got in. He asked me what I liked most about the speech. I answered, “If you can keep your focus on that which exists, then you need not do sadhana (spiritual practice) to get rid of that which doesn’t exist. It will disappear by itself. I liked this point.” Nannagaru was seated in the front seat. He turned all the way to face me sitting in the back seat and said, “You liked that! If one gets used to it, it is a very easy method. You can call it Sukha Margam (the easy path) if wish to.” Whenever I hear or think about anything pertaining to the Self, I remember this term easy path.

Once, in Arunachalam, we were all seated on the terrace around Nannagaru. I was supposed to leave for Hyderabad the next day on an important job. I was saddened and had tears in my eyes. I was sitting behind Nannagaru’s chair and sobbing quietly. Suddenly Nannagaru said, “Venamma! This hill looks like a pile of rocks. But my Guru likes it. So, I am learning to like it too. ”To teach that to make his wish as my wish, he has to come down so much, I thought? (Nannagaru just to solace Venamma Garu had said this, he very well knows Arunachala is embodiment of Grace). Every time I remember this anecdote, I get a touch of grace from the heart within, even now.

During the times of enjoying the bliss of his holy company, I used to narrate to Lakshmi how much I like to be in Nannagaru’s presence. Lakshmi said, “Like the presence of the Nannagaru in the thoughtless state of your heart and then tell me that you like to be his presence! The like that you are talking about now, is not real!” I was shocked. There was a huge struggle within for 15 days. Then I understood. Whatever we do use the mind is not the ultimate state. From then on I used just watch my mind. I enjoyed watching the mind for a long time. I realized that my mind was full of thoughts related to doubt. Unable to bear this, I wrote this on a piece of paper and handed it over to Nannagaru. “I seem to like the path of surrender. But if there are strong and repetitive thoughts of the same kind, then it means there is no surrender. My mind is eating me up. You alone have to show me a way out of this!” I wrote. His answer was another turning point in my life. He said, “If your thoughts (prarabdha) are like a tornado, then the Guru does what Eeswara(God) cannot do. They are coming because, He brings them up, shows them and removes them. Shows and removes… shows and removes. If in your destiny you have to lose your head, he will see to it that only the turban is lost. Your debt is being cleared by the Guru. This is grace. If you identify his grace, you will experience grace instead of your prarabdha (destiny). You must not leave the path of surrender. All you need to do is to identify the guru’s grace.” After that day, I felt that a clear cut direction for leading the rest of my life had been laid down.

Once, I went with Nannagaru to Vizag for some function. As there was a lot of time for it to start, Nannagaru was asked to take rest in a devotee’s house nearby. There he said, “You people say that the Guru loves the devotees. In truth, he loves because he cannot stay without loving”. After this, we attended another function in some other devotee’s house. I was sitting away from him. The devotees there served paakam gaarelu (doughnut-like snack dipped in sugar syrup). Nannagaru called me and asked me, with a beautiful smile on his face, “Venamma! What is this?” In an earlier speech, Nannagaru had said that the Bhagavadgita is like a plain gaare (doughnut) and the Bhagavatam was like paakam gaare (doughnut dipped in sugar syrup). So, I replied that it was Bhagavatam.

Whenever I remember his gaze, I feel like he is exerting force on my mind and is pushing it towards the heart. We worship Rama and Krishna as Gods believing what somebody has written years ago. We ask them to fulfil our desires. But Nannagaru is taking us to a desireless state. He filled the mind that was full of desires with his presence and totally erased the very desire to desire something. I sometimes wonder…. Have I really seen Nannagaru? Did he really call me Venamma? I get such thoughts often in fact. I guess he wants to prove all this is indeed real. Thoughts and memories related to him bring so much bliss and thrill, as though telling me, “Look! All this is real!” Sometimes, when I wish to offer my gratitude to him, I wonder to what all and how many incidents it is that I can thank him?

Nannagaru’s words- “I like all of you. Because it is I alone who is in all of you.”

భగవాన్ ను "Not at all Maharshi" అన్నారు. నాన్నగారు భగవాన్ ని Not at all Maharishi అంటే నీకు ఏమనిపించింది? Not at all Maharishi

Niryana is different from Nirvana

Niryana is different from Nirvana. Niryana refers to death whereas Nirvana refers to liberation. The goal of man's life is Nirvana and not Niryana. God's nature is liberation whereas our nature is ego. So without realizing God, liberation cannot be attained. Buddha is said to have attained the Nirvana state ie He secured liberation. The only goal of this life is Nirvana ie liberation.

Inside a Guru’s heart all devotees are equal

A devotee by name Bujji (nickname by which all devotees address him) is one of the attendants of Sri Nannagaru. He records his speeches, makes cassettes, CDs etc.

He posed a question to Nannagaru - "How can all devotees be equal to the Guru?"

Sri Nannagaru said - "Externally it might appear that all devotees are not equal, but inside a Guru's heart all the devotees are equal".

The gathered crowd was filled with happiness. All of the devotees expressed joy by applause.

"Guru's debt is unrepayable" - (By Mohana Garu)

In Chinchinada, a devotee was feeling very sorrowful. Nannagaru asked her the reason for her sorrow. “I have been chanting Sri Vishnusahasranama for the last 35 years. I have the desire that the Pushpaka Vimana (A plane sent from Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu) should come and take me like it did for Tukaram (great Maharashtrian saint). Some devotees told me that the ego, world and God are all creations of the mind. Now, would that mean that the Pushpaka Vimana will not come to take me?” she said. Nannagaru told her, “Who told you that the Pushpaka Vimana will not come? You just continue chanting Vishnu Sahasranama. The Pushpaka Vimana will come for you. I am assuring you. It will come. Just believe in what I told you.” The lady, who came with a heart full of sorrow, went back smiling. After she left, Nannagaru turned towards the devotees and said, “Who told her that ego, world and God are created by the mind? Whoever did, do you have these words in your experience? Bhagavan could say that because it is in his experience. He spoke out of his own experience. You must speak only that which is in your experience. If you tell them what you yourself do not have the experience, you will end up confusing them. They will lose whatever devotion they have.”

My friend brought her granddaughter from America to India. The child was two years old. She had started developing some skin condition in America. The doctor there had expressed doubt about the skin condition. Worried by this, they brought the two-year-old with them. We all reprimanded her for bringing a two-year-old. When you cannot take care of her, you should not have brought her here, we told her. A month later, Nannagaru came here. He spoke to her and said, “You are taking very good care of your grand-daughter.” We cannot speak with that much care and love. We lost our minds and felt that this is indeed the way to speak to anyone. We cannot assure anything. So we do not take the responsibility either. Just because we do not take the responsibility upon ourselves, nothing stops. If these very words were spoken by someone else, we do not like them. They seem appropriate only when Nannagaru speaks those words. Because he has it in his experience, we like whatever he speaks.

Once, in Jinnuru, while sitting on the verandah, a devotee asked Nannagaru, “How can one express his gratitude and repay the Guru’s debt?” Nannagaru replied, “Whatever supreme state the guru is in, you also must achieve and stay like that. That is the way to repay the guru’s debt!” “The guru himself takes this ego and dissolves it in the self. Then who will be left to feel gratitude or repay the debt? And to whom will the debt be repaid?” I asked. Nannagaru replied, “Mohana! You have asked a practical question. Here is your answer. When the ego is dissolved in the self, then who will repay was your question. In practice that is what happens.”

Once, Vizag Ramesh Garu approached Nannagaru and said, “I have read the Bhavadgita from top to bottom, missed nothing, but I did not find the deep sleep state (in waking) reference of Bhagavan anywhere.” Nannagaru said, “Read the second chapter!” Ramesh Garu started reading- "Aatmanyova aatmanaha". Immediately Nannagaru asked him to stop there and said, “When you are able to abide as the Atma (self) and not Anya (different) from the Atma (self), it means that you are in deep sleep ( in waking) state. In Bhagavadgita, every letter denotes a different path. You need to have an extremely subtle intellect to understand this. Today I am telling you something important. A lot of great souls (mahatmas) have come on this earth and will do so in the future too. Whatever paths they may teach, whatever words they could use will be in the Bhagavadgita. It will be there with certainty.” I have not heard anyone speak these words with this kind of beauty and grandeur. From that day my respect of Bhagavadgita multiplied manifold.

Once, after a visit to Balighattam, we came to PSN Raju Garu’s house. It was only the three of us there. In those days there was not much of a crowd, so I used to speak freely with Nannagaru. He asked me, “Tell me Mohana! Where is Balighattam?”I did not answer. “Is it on the way to Narsipatnam?” he asked again. I did not answer anything. “Balighattam also is in the mind.” Saying so, he got up from his chair, stood next to me and continued, “The responsibility of this world is borne by God. You just throw yours too on him and everything will just clear away.” He always spoke with my problems in mind. Not just me; whenever he spoke to anyone, it was always with reference to their circumstances. He never left anyone behind.

Once, in Jinnuru, we were all sitting on the verandah of his home. He looked at me and said, “ Mohana! If you think you are born, you will not get liberation!” “I think I was born, and I know I will not get liberation. To be able to say that I am that which is not born, we need the Guru’s grace, isn’t it Nannagaru? We are able to get glimpses of that great state now and then, and it is obvious that it is not due to our sadhana (spiritual practice). Then why should we do sadhana (spiritual practice)at all?” I asked. “Because the mind cannot stay without doing something or the other. That is the reason why the wise tell us to do sadhana.” He said. “What I mean to say Nannagaru is that whatever experiences I have had, it is clear to me that it is beyond the mind’s involvement. The mind too seems to crave this state. Then it should be called the grace of God, and not sadhana. Isn’t it?” I said. “If one understands this, then the reason for his taking birth on this earth is fulfilled. Everything is God!” Saying so, he folded his hands in a Namaskaram and said that he would retire for the day as he was feeling sleepy. He added, “Mohana! The subject that we are discussing, does not try to gather people around. It tries to make us closer to ourselves. This subject does not even give space for the thought for impressing people with bhajans.” That means his teaching is supreme and topmost. We are all contemporary witnesses and heirs to this supreme teaching.

Once, I told a devotee that I would accompany her on Giri Pradakshina (circumambulation of the holy hill). But she left without informing me. I was still at the Ashram when I noticed Nannagaru seated outside. As he was going back into his room all of us stood around. He beckoned me and said, “To attain Jnana we do not need the help of other devotees.” That means to attain Jnana we need the help of the Guru alone and not anybody else’s.

The first two years after meeting Nannagaru, he used to call out for me in whichever nook or corner I was, and ask me to sing. I took pride in the fact that I could sing well. Once, we all went to Arunachalam with Nannagaru. As it was Christmas time, some devotees brought a cake for cutting in the hall. Then they said someone needs to sing songs. I was asked to sing the previous year. I assumed I would be asked to sing again. I used to like to sing in public because of the praises I received. I did not even go to Ramanashramam to have dinner, because I was waiting for my name to be called out by Nannagaru. But that did not happen. Though I was smiling, inwardly my mind kept wondering how is it that there is so much desire for praise and appreciation in me. There was also sadness that Nannagaru did not call me to sing there. We all went with Nannagaru on Giri Pradakshina and stopped at Kubera lingam to take rest. I sat somewhere in the back of the crowd, and Nannagaru said, in a voice loud enough to reach my ears, “If we sing a song so as to please God, it is called Sangeetam (classical music). If we sing because somebody is going to praise us, it is market music.” This shows us that our Guru removes our tendency of pride by just one word. After this I never even got a single thought to sing in public. Even if I did sing it was out of love, it was not out of a desire to be appreciated by people.

Whether I did some Sadhana or not, after meeting Nannagaru I realized that the way I used to lead my life was not correct. I felt strongly that I should lead my life the way God told us to. Nannagaru’s teachings slowly brought in me the determination to do so. By Nannagaru’s grace, I came in contact with so many devotees. Looking at Nannagaru’s devotees and seeing the love they have for him, I feel that even though I do not have that Bhakti (devotion), it suffices to have the joy of looking at them. If I am able to rejoice to look at their devotion, quietness, naturalness and purity in this life, it is because of the attributes bestowed upon me by my Guru’s.

Even though I do not understand big words like devotion, Jnana or self, listening to Nannagaru’s speeches and filling all my memories with him, I am able to withstand the hardships that life is throwing at me. Had I missed Nannagaru, there would not be a bigger gain/wealth to lose in this life.

Nannagaru’s gaze is beautiful, the conversation is beautiful, love is beautiful, naturalness is beautiful… everything about him is beautiful. Of Nannagaru’s words, those that have made more impact and lead me in my life are (1) whatever has to happen is bound to happen. Whatever must not, how much ever effort one may put in, will not happen. This is certain. (2) Without Bhakti there is no Jnana. Bhakti is Jnana’s mother. (3) Whatever is in you, you see outside.

After Nannagaru’s darshan, my way of speaking and my way of thinking have changed completely. For changing this dry driftwood (modu in telugu) into a thing of beauty (Mohana in Telugu), there is nothing that can be offered to repay my Guru’s debt.

"A transformation, by touch of his holy feet" - (By Mohana Garu)

Since my childhood, I had a liking towards God. I used to like to perform puja (worship) to a framed picture of God. But till I met Nannagaru I had no idea what devotion, Jnana and Guru meant. On 1st May 1995, I had the chance of Nannagaru’s darshan at Shyamala’s house, at the behest of my friend. As soon as I saw him, I felt that his eyes were somehow wonderful.

From my childhood, my father used to invite many great mahatmas to our house. I never felt anything in their presence. But after Nannagaru’s darshan, I started feeling that I need to change. I felt, “He is not a person from this world. He is not human.” My shortcomings started to appear very big to me, like when you look through a magnifying glass. Then Nannagaru told me, “Look carefully for one good attribute in yourself, however small, and hold on to that. Bring it into practice. God’s interference will come.” I was very determined to change myself and kept asking Baba (Saibaba) daily. I used to address Baba as Sadguru deva. One day, I heard a voice from within, “You call me Sadguru deva always. The one who has come now is a Sadguru. Go there and you will find your answers.”

The second opportunity of Nannagaru’s darshan was at Shyamala’s house again. They say that dwitiya is adwiteeya (the second is the one without a second). From this second visit onwards I started feeling close to him in my heart. That day’s conversation went thus-

Nannagaru- Are you happy ma?
I fell on his feet weeping and asked him to bless me with devotion.
Nannagaru- You want devotion? Don’t you want liberation?
Devotion is enough for me, I answered.
Nannagaru- Do you read any books?
Me- I prefer to hear Nannagaru.

This is all he spoke. Nannagaru stayed in Vizag for another two days. But I did not go. But after this meeting, I started feeling some discontent. So, I started reading Ramana Bhaskara. Read it and weep for long, this routine went on for a fortnight. I used to weep even in my sleep unknowingly. The touch of his sacred feet did a lot in me. I started reading spiritual books. When I read Nannagaru’s ‘Amruthavakkulu’ (Words of Nectar), my mind would swing in joy.

I used to ask a lot of questions regarding liberation. Once, in Shyamala’s house, I asked Nannagaru, “Chanting a holy name or enquiry does not seem effective whenever the people I do not like come in my thoughts. You said chanting holy name suffices.”

“Mohana! When you have asked me so sincerely, I too must reply sincerely. When you chant a holy name, whatever tendency has surfaced will be suppressed for the time being and prevents the havoc it would create in your mind. But its seed remains inside. As long as the seed remains, the tendency will surface again.” He said. I asked him what the solution to this was. He replied, “You are worshipping God in some form. Keep asking him. Do not stop asking till it is gone.” From then on, for nearly five years, I kept praying and did not stop asking God that my nature should change.

Once during a discourse, he said, “Do you know what indicates that you are in Guru’s grace? You will begin to identify your shortcomings!”

Once, we went to Jinnuru in our car. We carried food, water and other things required for the journey. But I was not aware that the water we had brought with us was used up. Nannagaru asked us if had had our lunch. I told him that we had brought our lunch from home. He said that he would give 2 water bottles. I replied that we had brought water also with us. But he insisted, saying that it would be better to take these two bottles with us. I took them. In return journey, I wanted to drink some water. Then I realized that there was no water left and the only water we had was that given by Nannagaru. That way, the Guru takes care of even the water we need to drink. He takes care of all our needs. He provides whatever is required. He gives us Jnana when he thinks it is the right time.

Whenever I read Ramana Bhaskara, I would skip the part when the ‘body bound I enquiry’ was mentioned. I used to read more about surrender. Whenever Nannagaru came to Vizag, he would call me and ask me to sit by his side, in whichever corner I may be seated in the crowd. Once, he made me sit by his side for the entire duration of his 5-day stay and spoke about the body bound I; and at the end of his stay he said, “You do not like the topic of the body bound I!” I replied that I was not able to understand it. He said, “You are able to understand. See, all this story about the ‘ I’ is like the castle built by cards. To destroy a card house, you need not pull the cards one by one. You just need to pull the crucial one. The enquiry into this body I is like that. It falls, and the whole castle that it supports falls.”At that time I did not understand the meaning of those words. When I understood that ‘I mean consciousness’, I felt that, when the crucial card does not exist, what is the need for it to fall!

Once, I was reading the Bhagavadgita. I stopped at the sentence that said that I am the kshetrjna in all kshetras (The knower in all bodies). By the time I finished reading that sentence, my mind became still. Then I understood- I am consciousness. I am that I am. There is no second in it. When I understood that, unbearable bliss touched me. When I experienced that state, I felt that this indeed is love. Love is a torrential flow. That state is so wonderful that one feels like hugging the whole universe. Nannagaru gave this experience.

Once Nannagaru quoted Bhagavan and said, “I will serve everything in your plate and keep it ready for you. But swallowing is your job.” I asked Nannagaru, “Here swallowing is the most important thing. By what power can one swallow?” Then Nannagaru said, “If you surrender yourself, he will do the job of swallowing too.” Who else can tell us so clearly and in such a wonderful way?

Once Nannagaru asked me, “Mohana! Do you feel jealous? Are you making any effort to get rid of it?” I replied, “I do feel jealous Nannagaru and it is impossible to get rid of it.” “You can easily get rid of it if you do not compare yourself with others!” he said. Who can explain in such a beautiful way other than those who have the self in their experience! All those who can speak cannot speak beautifully. Who can bring forth such beauty in words? Only he can do that!
